‘Learning to Change the World’ event to celebrate five years of East of England Development Education Network
Harambee based Global Thinking Team put on an event to celebrate the first five years of East of England Development Education Network, to look forward to the next five years and inspire and inform educators from around the Eastern Region.
From the press release:
" The first five years of the East of England Development Education Network (EEDEN) was marked by an event at the Faculty of Education, Cambridge University on Tuesday December 4th. Over 75 key educators attended from across and beyond the region – including teachers, Local Authority education advisors, teacher training tutors, and education staff of Development Education centres and local and national NGOs that support the global dimension in schools. There was a sustained atmosphere of engagement, momentum and purpose throughout the day. "

Autumn Newsletter available for download
Our peace-themed Autumn newsletter publicises The International Day of Peace on the 21st of September. It also features a Hertfordshire schoolteacher discussing how she fitted peace and conflict issues into the curriculum. It contains the usual feature on resources (which complement the peace theme of this issue) and a list of upcoming events. Download here (400 KB).
Harambee does global games with 680 Beaver Scouts!
An eight member Harambee team of staff and volunteers ran games and activities for the Cambridge District Beavery - with the theme of the day being "One World, One Promise". Taking place on the 15th of July, Harambee provided games and activities from the global perspective with 680 Beaver Scouts, aged 6-8, taking part. The featured activities were: - Oware ( a West African board game)
- Carom (a boardgame from the Indian subcontinent)
- globe tossing games and a human map (to explore global connections)
- Chinese football (a complex handbased game)
- And "Hit it!" (a game loosely based on the Mexican pinyata tradition)
A great day was had by all, with Harambee being asked back for next year's event!

Harambee awarded three year Oxfam grant
Oxfam has awarded a £27 000, three-year grant to The Harambee Centre to strengthen its implementation of Development Education regionally. Acknowledging the grant, the Oxfam Assessment Panel congratulated Harambee for its successful
application and stated in a letter that they "were particularly impressed by the quality of the
application".
The cash injection will expand, and embed global citizenship education and help move Harambee forward as a key resource to educators, with ability to extend reach, building learning environments and sustain work.

Charges revised from April 2007 Owing to the need to recoup more of our costs for school workshops our workshop fees have been raised as of April. Also our membership fees for schools have increased slightly but with an important added membership benefit. More details here.
